ABOUT

Herschel Girls School presents 'Girls Like That' by Evan Placey. When a naked photo of a student goes viral around the school, a vicious chain reaction is triggered and Scarlett becomes the clear target for slut-shaming, rumour-spreading and the absolute ostracization by her peers. It is the very girls who have known Scarlett from kindergarten that throw the cruelest and heaviest punches. Rather than casting a protective ring around her, they delight in her downfall, criticizing her body and denouncing her as slut.

Evan Placey’s play explores much more than the high-school-mean-girl story. Balancing a savage comedy with issues that are critically relevant in an age where social media dictates the way in which we relate to one another, ‘Girls Like That’ interrogates the ideas of gender equality, feminism and the pressures on today’s digital generation.

Featuring a chorus cast of 41 Herschel students from Grades 9-12, ‘Girls Like That’ is a dynamic and hard-hitting juggernaut of a play. Weaving contemporary music and dance through its scenes as it shifts in time and place, it explores issues of female friendship and the fragility of feminism in the pressures of today’s adolescent reality. The play is essential viewing for teenage audiences, and for their parents.
