ABOUT
Somerset College present Antigone: An Adaptation from 23 to 26 April. The show starts at 19h00, except on Friday 26 April when it starts at 17h00.
The myth of Antigone’s defiance of the law by honouring her moral conscience has resonated through the ages with rebels, anarchists and seekers of equality who live under the yoke of politicians behaving like despots and lawmakers who do not listen the voices of the people they govern.
This adaptation of Antigone, written by Sophocles around 441 B.C. has been set in a time and world very much like our own. We meet King Creon, the ruler of Thebes, who is subjected to an inescapable cycle of torturous punishment for his betrayal of the ancient Greek gods, his family and morality. The Sentry, his longsuffering clown-companion, looks after his needs and ensures that his punishment by a cast of characters from his past carries on unabatedly. King Creon has to relive his acts of hubris and the resulting deaths of everyone he once loved – in perpetuity – thus satisfying the wrath of the gods and proving that a ruler who does not heed the needs of his people will suffer the consequences.
With a cast of 40 students, Antigone: an adaptation is a larger than life, moody spectacle focussed on entertaining young and old, critics and theatre lovers alike.
