Jeremy Gardiner (Guest Speaker)

Director of Investec Asset Management

Jeremy Gardiner is a director at Investec Asset Management with global responsibility for all media relations, advertising, events and branding in all the jurisdictions in which the firm operates. In addition, he is a regular voice in the media, at conferences and to the investment-related world at large, responsible for communicating Investec Asset Management’s views on current affairs, economics and investment markets.

A director of the company since 1999, he is also one of the longest standing members of the global executive management team. Jeremy’s career at Investec began in 1991, when he joined the Property Finance Division, and was instrumental in structuring financial deals for commercial property acquisitions.

He transferred to Investec Asset Management in 1993 as the portfolio manager responsible for the elite private client’s area. In 1995 Jeremy was appointed Head of Investec’s Unit Trust division, during which time the company won several prestigious awards for investment excellence. Jeremy also served on the board of Western Province/Stormers rugby from 2003 to 2005, during which time their performance was particularly poor!

Jeremy studied accountancy at the University of Cape Town and economics at the University of the Witwatersrand. 

Jeremy is one of South Africa’s leading financial trend forecasters who brings a fresh perspective to the local and global political backdrop. Jeremy will advise on how to evaluate the forever changing financial and political landscape of this country.



Refilwe Moloto (MC) 

Strategic and Economic Advisor

Refilwe Moloto is a strategic and economic advisor with 15 years' financial services experience in Emerging Markets research, broking and asset management in Johannesburg, New York and Cape Town. She is currently an External Expert Advisor on Eskom Pension & Provident Fund's Strategic Investment Committee, and Non-Executive Director of Redemption Capital Holdings, a recently-founded South African public and private sector advisory and investment firm.

Ms. Moloto most recently spent several years building Investec Asset Management’s dedicated Official Institutions Group for Africa. Her experience in this field ranged from structuring capacity building to supporting asset allocation and providing investment strategy solutions for the executive leadership, investment committees and investment teams of African sovereign wealth funds, national pension funds, large pension funds and central banks. She joined Investec Asset Management as a relationship executive and macro strategist, managing some of the firm’s largest institutional relationships in South Africa.

Prior to her time at Investec Asset Management, her background as an economist on the South African desk at Merrill Lynch grew into coverage of Nigerian economics and sub- Saharan emerging market debt analysis. She then moved to New York to join the company’s number one-rated Emerging Europe Middle East & Africa institutional sales team. There, she advised some of the largest Global Emerging Markets portfolio managers across the United States on equities investments in Russia, Central & Eastern Europe, sub- Saharan Africa, Turkey & Israel, and the Middle East & North Africa.

Ms. Moloto is a member of the Institute of Directors of Southern Africa, a Fellow of the 11th Class of the Africa Leadership Initiative, forms a part of the BRICS Business Council Sovereign Wealth Fund Working Group and is currently pursuing her Masters in Commerce, specialising in Development Finance at the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business. 

Refilwe is a commentator and thought leader on strategic economic & financial market development in Africa. She currently hosts the mid-morning radio show, Upfront with Refilwe Moloto, on Cape Talk and is a headlining contributor to its weekly Business in Africa segment.
