ABOUT

One-way ticket to Mars

The South African physicist, scientist and innovator Dr Adriana Marais is 1 of the 100 "Mars One Project" astronaut candidates in the running to move to the red planet within the next decade, with only one mission: the expansion of the human society beyond Earth. Although, the Mars One Project faces financial challenges, she is still determined to fly to Mars - one way or another.

Dr Adriana Marais has a remarkable background and the right mindset to qualify for such an aspiring project. Since 2017 she has been the Head of Innovation at SAP Africa and leads the Foundation for Space Development South Africa. She holds a PhD in quantum biology, an MSc in quantum cryptography and is currently pursuing a second PhD in economics designing a resource-based economic model facilitating sustainable expansion beyond Earth. Dr Adriana Marais has also won several awards for her research work.

As a keynote speaker, she will take the audience on a fascinating and futuristic journey of science, technology and the human desire to explore the unknown.

This event is not to be missed for the curious minds!

“The reason I want to go to Mars is simple: The allure of the unknown is far more powerful than the comfort of the known”. - Dr Adriana Marais

The Robotics team of the German International School Cape Town “ASAP” presents the event “One-way ticket to Mars” as one of their fundraising efforts to participate at the First Lego League World championships in Detroit (US) in April, after winning the SA Championships end of last year.

All proceeds go towards the learners.

The topic of the National Championships was “Into Orbit - looking at how to meet the challenges of space travel."

As a part of the event, the DSK Robotics team will explain their project of how to create methane from the Martian atmosphere. This is to be used as rocket fuel to power rockets to return to Earth or to explore the outer solar system. The team will also demonstrate some robotic tasks they had to perform during the Championships.
