ABOUT

JOIN THE CHALLENGE!

On the 1st of May, Dawid De Wet will climb the mighty Compassberg BAREFOOT in aid of his son Richter's soccer team, Dangerous Darkies. Established in 1972, Dangerous Darkies is the oldest standing football club in Graaff-Reinet. Richter started with this team early in January, and the first thing he noted was that none of the kids have shoes. They either play barefoot (on very rough terrain) or they share boots, each wearing only ONE on their kicking foot. We would like to change that, and you can too by joining Dawid on this hike (you can wear shoes).

The Compassberg (2502m) is the highest peak in the Sneeuberg range and the second highest in the Eastern Cape. The vegetation along the climb is montane grassveld. There are 360° views of the Karoo from the summit.

Your ticket price will enable us to buy one pair of soccer boots for a young player.

THE DETAILS:

We'll meet at the Nieu-Bethesda Tennis Club at 5:30 am, from where you'll be transported to the starting point of the climb. This road is only accessible with a 4x4. It's 40km and takes about an hour to get there. You have an option to use your own transport or make use of provided transport at an extra cost. The plan is to start the hike at 7 am. It's a 5km hike (2.5km up and down) and takes approximately 5 hours to finish. A good pair of tekkies or hiking boots and a moderate level of fitness are required. We'll depart from the berg around 13:00 and make our way back to Nieu-Bethesda for lunch (included in your ticket price).

Not keen to climb? Buy a Dangerous Darkies supporter shirt or make a donation toward the cause.
