PEDALS FOR PEACE - AFRIKABURN 2024 -

CHANGING LIVES ONE PEDAL STROKE AT A TIME

The ever evolving world that is Pedals for Peace - Lessons learned for Afrikaburn 2024 Quaggafontein

Quaggafontein is not suited to bicycles with conventional narrow tyres!! To this end we have been able to source bicycle with slightly broader tyres and a more relaxed riding position - these bikes will be far more suitable to the sandier terrain that one will find Afrikaburn !

IMPORTANT PROJECT UPDATE

As a result of the terrain at Quaggafontein we have had to revise the way we now operate the bicycle distribution project. Please read on to appreciate the challenges faced and how these were resolved

There are a number of factors that affect what bikes we use and are suitable for Afrikaburn/Quaggafontein and then post event what bikes we acquire and are suitable for our distribution to those identified as being the beneficiaries of your amazing gesture

1)    Bikes for Quaggafontein and the week of Afrikaburn

2)    Bikes that we distribute into the projects we identify

Bikes for Quaggafontein:

Typically the bikes required for the new site are required to be bikes more suited to a sandier environment. To this end we have sourced and successfully used a “Cruizer” type bicycle with a slightly wider width tyre more suited to the sandier terrain of Quaggafontein. This bike also has a slightly more relaxed riding position making it a more comfortable ride. These are premium quality bikes and it is our intention to continue to use these for the foreseeable future,

Bikes for post event distribution:

The bicycles we use at Afrikaburn while well suited to the Tankwa are not if fact ideally suited for distribution to commuters in a rural environment with limited bicycle repair outlets.

So to ensure that we get the right bicycles into the hands of those in need we have join hands with BEN (Bicycling Empowerment Network) and have secured BRAND NEW bicycles which are then distributed to the identified projects.

These bikes are simple commuter bikes that are easy to repair and maintain. They are designed to withstand the rugged South African environment and tough climate.

So how does it work?

It is simple – The money you pay for the use of the “Afrikaburn Cruizer” goes to securing a BRAND NEW (unused and dust free) BEN Bike4All bicycle. These come complete with a helmet, spares and tools for each of the worthy recipients. We will have a few samples of these bikes on the campsite for you to see and appreciate what the recipients will be receiving.
