Kloofendal Nature Reserve

ABOUT

This two-hour history easy walk takes you from the Stamp Mills up to and into the Struben Confidence Reef gold mine, highlighting where the gold came from, and the people who discovered it, leading to the rise of the city of gold, Johannesburg. Rod will take you back to the 1880s and the characters who found gold here and changed the history of South Africa.

A booklet entitled Chasing Gold - the story of the pioneers who found gold on the west Witwatersrand and the part of Kloofendal Nature reserve played in it, will be on sale at R50 per copy. Please bring exact money.

The walk is easy and the mine is an open-cast mine with no special fitness required. This walk is aimed at adults and children 15 years upwards. This event is conducted every first Sunday of each month by Rod Kruger, historian at Kloofendal Nature Reserve.

Meet at the Ecological Centre 15 minutes before the event. This event will go ahead regardless of the weather. For queries, please contact the Friends of Kloofendal (phone, WhatsApp) on 079 693-5608. For more information about Kloofendal Nature Reserve, please go to www.kloofendalfriends.org.za
