Relive Europe's musical 'Golden Age' in a century of French song

Cape Town Opera is proud to present Young Artists Brittany Smith (soprano) and Ané Pretorius (soprano), with Managing Director Alex Gabriel at the piano, in French Songbook, a concert celebrating a century (1840s – 1940s) of French mélodie.

Our journey begins and ends in the salons and cabaret theatres of Paris and traverses Europe’s ‘golden age’ (La Belle Epoque) via the desert sands of North Africa and the battlefields of war. We meet Hamlet’s Ophelia, travel with an English mouse on a boat trip to France, and help a mad hatter fix his watch that is three days late. You will hear songs of unrequited love, enjoy mini-scenes as if at the opera, waltz in a haunted house, be transported back to medieval France, and dance at the cabaret.

The programme includes mélodies by French masters such as Berlioz, Bizet, Duparc, Hahn, Ravel, Satie and Poulenc, as well as a few surprises by lesser-known French composers. We invite you to join us on our journey!
