Eco dyeing workshop

Sun Oct 3, 10:30 - Sun Oct 3, 15:30

Veld and Sea Glasshouse

ABOUT

Led by artist, Belinda Faulkner, guests are invited to come and learn the basics of eco (botanical) printing techniques. Eco printing is a form of natural dyeing where pigments and tannins are extracted from plant material to create once-off, original prints. Part science, part art, part intuition, the course will cover mordanting, fabrics, bundling, plant materials and boiling/steaming. Participants will create their own items using this breathtaking technique and will leave the course with unique items and the start of a fascinating new skill.

All equipment will be supplied, including a silk scarf for dyeing. Participants will be required to bring washing up gloves, an apron and a love of fabric and plants.

Refreshments and a light lunch will be provided.

Faulkner has a background in art, having studied at the University of Stellenbosch. Having recently left the financial services field after many years, she is now focussed full-time on creating her own distinct artworks. She focuses mostly on eco printing, does private commissions and sells her work online. She enjoys passing on the skills and techniques she has developed over the last four years. An amateur botanist, avid hiker and forager, she is always experimenting with new ideas and concepts she gains from her continuous learning.

This intimate class costs R1200 per person and is five hours long. Kindly note that this event will only take place if there are a minimum of 10 participants.
