About

Tissy's Mom story

14 June 2020, exactly a year ago our lives were turned upside down. We were faced with possibly the worse news any parents could have anticipated. Our Tisetso Phehello (Tissy) had a scheduled medical procedure after he cut the corner of his lip. The doctors insisted that he gets administered an anesthetic in theatre due to living with Autism. A procedure that was supposed to take 15minutes, dragged for 2 hours. When the medical team approached my daughter and me to explain the delay. I never anticipated the horror I was presented with.

A 6-year-old bouncing hyperactive boy who was wheeled into theater taking pics of everyone in the room versus the lifeless body under so many machines, was by far contracts. It turned out after they administered the anesthetic, he aspirated leading to cardiac arrest. The team managed to resuscitate him but the damage caused by the oxygen not being transported to the brain caused severe brain damage. For the next 3 months, he was fighting for his life in ICU, from being on life support to eventually being able to breathe on his only. Only to suffer from Steven Johnson Syndrome (a rare reaction to medication causing the skin to fall off) which delayed his progress. It was a hectic period having to wake up each day to go and spend 12 hours next to his bedside.

In September 2020 he was finally released to a rehabilitation center, where he spent almost 2 months before he was forcefully discharged to a step-down facility in preparation for his homecoming. Tissy finally joined us in February 2021...Having him home was a relief, it meant less time spent traveling up and down to the hospitals daily. Kodwa the road hasn't been easy, the whole house had to be renovated to accommodate his current condition (Cerebral Palsy). A special bed similar to the ones at the hospital had to be purchased, the lighting had to be changed to accommodate his eyesight.

The past year has taken a toll on us emotionally, mentally, physically, and financially. We took in a boy who was running screaming and couldn't sit still in the hospital. What we return with, was a survivor. Who beats death at its doorstep. Tissy is currently paralyzed (suffered a stroke on both sides of his brain). He can't talk, walk, move, eat nor relieve himself. He requires the assistance of medical assistance daily. I don't know how we have survived this, it can only be through God's grace. Whatever He is preparing us for, we still have to figure it out. In the meantime, we remain in God's promises that He will never leave nor forsake us.

What is needed

Tissy has to go through expensive rehabilitation for a good 7 years and needs a wheelchair as he is paralysed. In the meantime while we are trying to raise funds for his wheelchair his dad has made him a chair to relieve him from laying on the bed the whole day.
